What to Expect

Orthodontic treatment is a long-term procedure that requires good cooperation between patient and doctor. The following is a brief explanation of our office policies and procedures.

Initial Examination

This brief meeting allows us to evaluate the orthodontic problem and to discuss issues such as: when should treatment begin, what kind of treatment is needed, how much does it cost, and to answer any other questions you may have. This meeting is a courtesy appointment at no charge.

If it is too early to start treatment but future orthodontic problems may arise, the doctor may schedule the patient for recall visits to monitor the development of the teeth. If orthodontic treatment is ready to begin, we will schedule a records appointment.

Orthodontic Records

This appointment consists of taking x-rays that show facial bone structures and the root positions of all teeth, impressions (molds) of the teeth from which we construct plaster models to show the bite relationships, and photographs of the teeth and face. A fee will be charged for the records appointment. This fee is for diagnosis and is not part of the orthodontic treatment fee.

Case Presentation

Approximately four weeks after records are taken we will meet to discuss treatment. The patient and, if applicable, both parents are encouraged to attend. We want our patient to understand the importance of treatment and how his or her cooperation is critical to achieving the best results. Please feel free to bring up any questions or concerns you may have regarding treatment. At this appointment financial arrangements will be discussed. We will explain issues such as insurance, billing, monthly payments, etc.

Appointments

Orthodontic treatment requires periodic supervision to complete treatment on schedule. Once braces are installed, most appointments will be made at four to six week intervals. In consideration of the value of your time, we usually remain on schedule. Unexpected emergencies sometimes occur, and there will be times when we run behind schedule, but these times are the exception rather than the rule. If you are unable to keep your scheduled appointment, we ask that you notify our office as soon as possible for rescheduling.

Because most of our patients are students, please understand that it is impossible to see all patients after school. To minimize lost school time for as many patients as possible, we reserve after school appointments for short appliance adjustments, and will work with you and your school so scheduling during the day will be as convenient as possible.

The treatment time for most full orthodontic cases falls between 20 and 30 months. During orthodontic treatment, please continue to see your regular family dentist for semi-annual check-ups and cleanings. Family dentists in Sussex include Drs. John Magnusson and Gina Ostrand, Drs. Mark Waller and Karen Boettcher at Sussex Dental, and Dr. Natalie Peterson at Peterson Family Dentistry.
