Patient Information
How braces work

Braces use consistent, gentle pressure to move teeth into their proper alignment. Although a traditional orthodontic treatment takes approximately two years to complete, there are many variables that can affect the length of treatment. The age of the patient, the severity of the condition, and how well the patient responds to treatment can all affect treatment time.

Since no two people are exactly alike, it is important that each person’s orthodontic treatment be based on a personalized diagnosis. At Advanced Orthodontics office, all “first time” patients are seen for a complimentary inital exam. If orthodontic treatment is indicated, a second appointment is made to gather the appropriate information to form the individualized treatment plan.

Start Treatment Early
Although an orthodontist can enhance a smile at any age, it is sometimes beneficial to start orthodontic treatment even before all of the adult teeth are present. This early treatment phase usually lasts less than twelve months and is only used if the doctor feels it will make the second phase of treatment less complicated and can prevent the removal of permanent teeth at a later date. If the doctor feels that early treatment is necessary and the patient eventually needs full braces, the cost of the early treatment phase will be deducted from the cost of full braces.

Most general dentists are very good at referring a patient to an orthodontist at the appropriate time for braces. However, it is not necessary to have a dentist’s referral to be seen for a complimentary exam.
